Memory Plus

DSN9164-2-MMemorial Day seems to have lots of roots. I’ve heard many traditions of how it got started. Even Facebook has its seemingless endless reminders of how important memories and honoring the deceased really is.

My mom, as long as she was able, would use this day to visit the cemeteries that carried the markers as reminders of people she had lost. She visited and took flowers to her parents, her parents-in-law; two of her children; and would also spend time recognizing others buried alongside. Remembering roots, people, experiences, memories were an important ingredient of thoughtfully moving forward. She molded encouragement and inspiration by demonstrating the importance of the positives of the past influencing the future.

I had a supervisor that had a great memory, and used it well in working relationships. He would often pass by me, or another of his reports, and make a comment like, “I was just thinking about the time you… that was a great thing you did.” He was great at encouraging us by remembering our past successes and reminding of us our contributions. He molded encouragement and inspiration by demonstrating the importance of the positives of the past influencing the future.

Great leaders remember the positives.
